Knocking on Heaven’s Door, Love or Something Like That, others lead Golden Movie Awards nominations
The Maiden edition of the Golden Movie Awards nominations announcement took place on May 21 at the Oak Plaza hotel. Nominations for 32 categories were unveiled including The AWDF African Women In Film (AWIF) award which is presented to an African woman who has demonstrated through her work measurable efforts to change the narrative and challenge stereotypes about African women.
This award also reflects AWDF’s commitment to raise the profile of African women, increase public support for women’s rights and social justice, and to facilitate platforms for African women’s views and achievements
Massively attended, the evening saw celebrities, stakeholders, sponsors, partners, film makers, producers and media partners come together. Country Director, Mina Andani gave the welcome Address and grand jury’s Vice -Chairperson Amba Mpoke-Biggs talked about the selections process, stressed on the fact that the Golden Movie Award Scheme is a performance based award process and not popularity and then after, revealed the nominees
The night also unveiled the main sponsor, SURFLINE and other supporting sponsors like JACK DANIELS, followed by partners African women Development Fund (AWDF) and UNAIDS and finally donors SLEEK COSMETICS .Musical performances were by Irene Logan, offie Kudjoe and Adomaa .The host of the night was Berla Mundi
Golden Movie Awards (GMA) is a scheme that seeks to honour individuals in the African movie industry who have impacted and excelled greatly in the movie world under the year of review and has also embarked on humanitarian works throughout their countries.It also seeks to influence the movie industry for great standards, to throw light on individuals and firms yearly by celebrating them. It is also an award scheme that seeks to build and grow the stakeholders through its capacity building programs and activities with its partners. The calendar year for the maiden edition is from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2014.
The maiden edition largely saw entries from Ghana and Nigeria with movies such as Love or Something Like That, Knocking on Heaven’s Door, 30 Days In Atlanta, Apaye, Made In Agege, When Love Comes Around, Love Regardless and others receiving multiple nominations. Below is the list of nominations:
